Protecting the account
Sentinel-7 addresses cheating. Project Aegis addresses the separate problem of players being victimised: accounts compromised, items stolen, players defrauded.
These need different approaches. A cheater is hostile to the game; a compromised account belongs to a victim, and treating them as the same actor punishes the wrong person.
Behavioural authentication
How a player moves, navigates menus and interacts is distinctive enough to indicate when an account is being used by someone else, without asking anything of the legitimate player.
The research is in the false-positive rate. Locking someone out of their own account is a serious failure, so the signal has to trigger additional verification rather than direct enforcement.
Economy and reputation
Fraud usually leaves a trace in the economy before it is reported, and monitoring for implausible flows can surface it earlier than a support ticket.
Reputation systems are the long-term direction: giving players a way to judge who they are dealing with, while resisting the manipulation such systems inevitably attract.
